PAYE Proposal for Gig Economy Workers

Workers in the gig economy could soon have income tax deducted from their earnings if the government accepts the recommendations of their independent tax advisers. The proposal will require those employed in gig economy platforms such as Uber and Deliveroo to have tax deducted from their earnings and have this transferred to HMRC, with the online platform operating a system equivalent to that of PAYE.

Employers Effort to Avoid Pensions

In the first three months of 2018, The Pensions Regulator issued 35,662 enforcement notices against employers in breach of auto-enrolment rules. This is due to employers trying to encourage staff to opt out of the auto-enrolment pensions system in an attempt to cut costs.

Are Unpaid Internships Becoming Obsolete?

Relevant work experience has become an essential part of gaining a graduate job after achieving a degree. Internships allow students to explore a profession that is of interest to them, and allows them to gain valuable and practical experience to add to their CVs. Further to this, it increases the graduate’s chances of getting a job as the employer will already be familiar with them.

Self-employed? Or not self-employed?

There is an increase in individuals falling prey to the taxman as a result of the increasing number of individuals turning to freelancing. An example comes from the BBC where over 100 employees working as freelancers could now be facing tax bills as a result of them not working as direct employees.
